Description
Overview
Experience the awe-inspiring grandeur of Abu Simbel on a memorable day trip from Aswan. These remarkable temples, built by Pharaoh Ramses II over 3,000 years ago, are set against the dramatic backdrop of Lake Nasser. Carved directly into the sandstone cliffs, the two temples of Abu Simbel were intended as a display of Egypt’s power and dedication to the gods, making them some of the most celebrated architectural achievements of the ancient world.
The larger temple, dedicated to Ramses II, features four colossal statues of the pharaoh seated in front of the entrance, each reaching an astonishing height of over 20 meters. Inside, its grand halls are filled with intricate carvings and statues that depict Ramses’ victories and his devotion to the gods Amun, Ra-Horakhty, and Ptah. The smaller temple, crafted for his beloved queen Nefertari, stands as a rare tribute to the queen, highlighting her status and beauty.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site was painstakingly relocated in the 1960s to avoid submersion by the rising waters of Lake Nasser following the construction of the Aswan High Dam. This marvel of engineering saved Abu Simbel’s breathtaking heritage for future generations, allowing visitors today to experience it in its entirety.
